ERTMS - modernizing railways

Increasing the capacity of rail transport is one of the most important ways to take Europe towards carbon neutrality. The railways of the future will therefore increase environmentally friendly train traffic, its reliability and the safety of movement. In order to become a reality, it requires a digital leap.

ERTMS or European Rail Traffic Management System is an EU-wide rail transport digitalisation project

In Finland, the Digirata-project modernises train access control, safety devices and traffic management. The Digirata-project will be taken forward in four different phases. At the moment, the development and verification phase is ongoing and will continue until 2027. The total funding for the development and verification phase is approximately EUR 140 million, and it has been granted to two different projects. Welado employees work in several different roles at Digirata.

Europe and Sweden are slightly ahead of Finland in ERTMS development work, and several projects are already being implemented. In Sweden, for example, Bothia Line, Ådal line, Haparanda line and Västerdal line are already equipped with ERTMS. Welado-STHK is involved in several ERTMS development and implementation projects in Sweden, both as experts for the infrastructure owner and as consultants in the modernization of the equipment.
